About Me

liz_portrait_2013-04-2I am a skilled and experienced counsellor, able to support those with many kinds of emotional and psychological troubles.  My aim is to get you back to happy living as quickly as possible.  I also work as a life coach along with being a supervisor within education and healthcare.

I hold the Human Givens Post-Graduate Diploma (grade: distinction); BTEC level 5 in therapeutic counselling; am a trained teacher of mindfulness through the Oxford Mindfulness Centre;  have completed a BSc (Hons) degree in combined sciences and am a registered and qualified teacher.  I am also an accredited member of the  BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and follow their policies and guidelines.  I am a fully recognised practitioner by the Professional Standards Association.

I run a private practice from my home where I have a comfortable, private counselling room.  Part of my counselling experience has included: working in the NHS as an honorary psychotherapist; working for the charity PTSD Resolution, helping veterans returning from active combat with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by using the 'rewind technique; offering weekly counselling sessions to Mind, the charitable organisation that focusses on helping those with well-being and mental health issues.  I also work with young people in school settings.

I have had over twenty five years professional experience.   I have been a special needs teacher for many years, teaching pupils with a wide range of needs including Aspergers Syndrome.  For fifteen years I also worked in an acquired brain injury rehabilitation setting, providing rehabilitation and education for patients and support for their loved-ones.

I am also a teacher of mindfulness, a well researched technique to manage life's stresses and strains and  develop awareness, thereby enhancing a person's overall quality of life whatever their situation.  I have been trained by Professor Mark Williams at Oxford Mindfulness Centre and am qualified and to teach the eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Relief (MBSR) course to groups and to apply mindfulness as part of cognitive therapy on a 1 to 1 basis. I have taught one-off taster sessions and MBSR courses to groups in a variety of settings including to staff in schools, a hospital and charities.

I have been passionate about my work all my life and thoroughly enjoy the need to work in a stimulating, thoughtful and creative manner  to help others overcome their obstacles and move forward.  I have worked alongside people with a wide range of issues in a diverse range of situations.

I would like to add, I also bring to each consultation or session, many years of life experience.  I have been married twice and have two sons and three stepchildren and seven grandchildren.  I have consequently, personally experienced many of life's downs and ups!
