What happens when our needs are not met? |
The way our essential needs are met and the way we use our resources are what determine our mental and physical health. When these requirements are met in balance we are more likely to feel mentally healthy and stable. But when too many innate physical and emotional needs are not being met in the environment, or when our resources are being used incorrectly, unwittingly or otherwise, we suffer considerable distress.
In some cases innate resources may not have fully developed, perhaps due to lack of opportunity in their environment, or they may have been subject harmful conditioning, such as a traumatic event or damage of some sort.
Psychological therapy can help identify the causes of distress to promote healing.
The next three pages outline our basic physical and emotional needs followed by our innate resources.
